Level 1, Level 2 and DC fast charging
There are three kinds of EV charging. They differ in power, which sets how fast the car fills up.
- Level 1 is a regular 120-volt outlet. It adds only a few miles of range per hour, so it works for overnight top-ups or plug-in hybrids.
- Level 2 is a 240-volt charger, the kind you install at home or find at workplaces, hotels and shopping centers. Most add roughly 20 to 40 miles of range per hour, enough to fill the typical EV overnight.
- DC fast charging feeds direct current to the battery at high power. A fast charge typically takes the battery from about 10 percent to 80 percent in 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the car and charger. Charging slows down as the battery fills, so most road-trip stops are short, to about 80 percent.
Of the 82,690 public stations in this site's database, 15,815 have DC fast chargers (78,984 fast ports) and 68,309 have Level 2 (181,080 ports).
