EV plug types: NACS, CCS, J1772, CHAdeMO
Four connectors matter in the US.
- J1772 is the standard plug for Level 1 and Level 2 charging on non-Tesla cars.
- CCS (Combined Charging System) adds two large pins under a J1772 plug for DC fast charging. Most non-Tesla EVs sold in the US in recent years use CCS.
- NACS is the connector Tesla developed, now standardized as SAE J3400. Many automakers have adopted it for newer models and use Tesla's network, and adapters exist for earlier cars.
- CHAdeMO is an older DC fast standard used by the Nissan Leaf and a few other cars. It is being phased out in the US.
Check the connector that your car has and the one the station lists before you drive there. The finder shows the plug types the database lists for each station. If you are not sure whether an adapter will work on a given network, check with the manufacturer and the network.
