EV road trip tips
- Plan the stops before you leave. Look for fast-charging sites with several chargers, so a single broken or occupied one does not strand you.
- Charge to about 80 percent at DC fast chargers. The last 20 percent is slow, and two shorter stops are often faster than one long one.
- Arrive with a buffer. Plan to reach each charger with 10 percent or more left, more in cold weather or hills.
- Expect lower range in cold weather and at highway speeds.
- Have a backup. Know a second charger within range, because stations sometimes are down or full.
- Precondition the battery if your car offers it, because a warm battery charges faster in cold weather.
- Use the apps of the networks along your route, and check live status before you rely on a charger.
