Free EV charging

The Department of Energy database lists 8,607 public stations that say charging is free. The count by state is below; use the search on the home page to find the closest.

Free chargers are usually at libraries, city halls, parks, hotels, shopping centers and car dealers, and a lot of them are Level 2, so a car that is parked for a few hours gets a useful charge. Listings are entered by operators and go out of date, so a free charger can turn into a paid one, and a "free" site might still charge for parking. Call ahead or check the network's app before counting on it.

Tip: on the home page tick "Free only" after you search to see free chargers near you.
