How to pay for EV charging
Payment varies by network. Most chargers take one or more of these:
- The network's app, with a payment card stored in your account. This is the most common and often the cheapest, since member prices are lower.
- RFID card from the network.
- Tap to pay with a credit card or phone, on newer chargers.
- Plug and charge, where the car and charger identify each other and bill your account automatically.
Some stations are free or run by cities or businesses with their own rules. Parking fees can apply even when electricity is free. Download the apps of the two or three networks you use most before a road trip, because cell signal can be poor at chargers.
